Tips For Success With New Plants
The first few days and weeks can make all the difference in the success or failure of your new plants. Before you buy, we encourage you to take advantage of our knowledgeable staff to make sure you are choosing the right plants for your particular needs.
- Ask your salesperson if you have any questions on planting techniques, watering, etc.
- Make sure your plants are well watered before you put them in the ground.
- Follow the guidelines in our Planting Guide to properly install your new plantings.
- Until your plants are established, provide frequent, light waterings. This could be as often as every day for small containers that are very rooted in. For most trees and shrubs, 1-3 gallons of water each time you water is adequate.
- When you water, use a hose with a rain wand or watering can, and apply the water directly to the root ball. Keep in mind that light rain, overhead sprinklers and soaker hoses do not reliably get the water where it is needed for newly installed plants.
- For the first growing season use Fertilome® Root Stimulator, Superthrive™or a similar product once a month when watering.
- Use a shredded organic mulch around your new plantings to conserve water and keep weeds down. A 2-4” layer is best, and never pile mulch up on the trunk of trees or shrubs.
- If you think you may have a problem, ask us about it before it is
too late. You may submit digital photos via our contact page, or call
or stop by the garden center or landscape center.
